That's one of the strengths of the Australian system we're really a first world country with world competitive resources all in one package. In order to compete you really need to have stable, yet very open and transparent systems. So we're very aware that around the world we're competing for talented people and competing for capital. Wilkinson Australia's very conscientious that while the resource is fixed in a country or where it’s being deposited, capital is not. Oil & Gas Investor Australia What policies have been implemented to encourage exploration and production, or just investment in general, from abroad? We’ll have all the sort of things that go with a vastly more mature industry than what we have at the moment, just because of those numbers. We'll be reaching critical mass to enable the research and development. What that means for the industry is we'll be bringing in additional service companies. Wilkinson So when we move up to those sorts of levels we've got probably between 5.5 Tcf and 6 Tcf of production coming forward. Oil & Gas Investor Australia What does that mean for the oil and gas industry in Australia? ![]() We're reaching the next quantum step up in terms of what goes on in the industry. We can become comparable to Canada, for example, in terms of infrastructure and the sorts of things that are required to make that industry work efficiently and effectively. What that does, in effect, is bring Australia up to the next level of gas production. With the LNG projects that are being developed and coming online-we're going to see triple the export volumes of LNG into those Asian markets. ![]() By comparison, Australia has about 50 per cent of its gasses exported, 50 per cent is used in the domestic markets-about 1 Tcf. Wilkinson With so many resources and reserves available, LNG is the obvious answer. Oil & Gas Investor Australia And the answer is? So the trick here is how do we access that? How do we participate in that growth in Asia? So, the logical next step is to look forward into the export markets, in particular Asia, China, Japan, Korea, the growth economies. These resources are well in excess of what Australia can consume with our own domestic demand for decades, if not centuries. Rick Wilkinson Australia is blessed with very large gas reserves and resources that will encourage exploration for the future. With that in mind, how important does that make exports, and what are the country and the states doing to enable that growth in exports? Oil & Gas Investor Australia The domestic market in Australia is small in comparison to much of the world. ![]() But where does the country’s oil and gas industry go from here? During his recent visit to the U.S., Oil and Gas Investor Australia sat down for a one-on-one chat with APPEA’s chief technical officer Rick Wilkinson about Australia’s oil and gas future. When it comes to CSG-to-LNG production, Australia has become a first mover and is now one of the world’s major oil and gas producers. The possibility of exporting LNG made from coal seam gas (CSG) wasn’t yet a consideration. It was only a decade ago when Australia was talking about importing energy resources from places such as Papua New Guinea.
